Look what all your fundraising efforts have achieved.....

When this fundraising started nearly 3 years ago we never imagined that so much would be achieved, but we are now able to inform you that all your hard work, fundraising, running, cycling and sponsorship has paid off.

Dr Kath Price at Sheffield Children's Hospital got in touch to tell us that along with the funds raised by kidswithtod and further support from the Children's hospital charity she now has sufficient funds to start the next 'KICk-OFF' educational research study in children from 4-11yrs looking at the best ways to teach our children, their families and carers how to manage their diabetes.

This is the letter we received from Dr Price:

To KIDSWITHTOD fundraising.

Thanks to the heroic fundraising efforts of KIDSWITHTOD families and friends and funding from The Children’s Hospital Charity we are now able to take forward a new research project which is focusing on younger children with type 1 diabetes.

We are calling this KICk-OFF Junior as it is a spin off from the KICk-OFF project which developed an education course for 11-16 yr olds with diabetes.

We realise that there is a huge amount to learn when a child develops diabetes. Many children are diagnosed when they are very young and so the initial education is largely focussed on their parents. As they grow up, they need to learn how to manage their diabetes themselves so that when they move into secondary school they can be moderately independent and can hopefully keep good diabetes control.

During the KICk-OFF Junior project we will work with primary school teachers to develop
educational material which is suited to various age groups – from reception class level through to year 6. We will produce lesson plans for diabetes teams to follow and will have games and activities which help children learn more about their diabetes but in a fun way and in a way that is familiar to them from school.

We will then run some of these new sessions in Sheffield. We will be asking families about their experiences and also measuring through questionnaires and by looking at the diabetes control, whether they seem to have been helpful. We will also be working with experts in education who will observe the teaching to see if they can suggest better ways of doing it.

All research takes time and money but we feel this is a fantastic opportunity to help diabetes teams across the UK to teach their children about their diabetes. At the end of the day, the main aim is to help children have good diabetes control and lead full and healthy lives.

Many thanks to TOD for making this happen.

Dr Kath Price.

To each and everyone of you that got involved Thank you.

We still did it...

I am very pleased to be able to let you know that despite the problems at yesterday's Sheffield half marathon and fun run Team ToD still participated in both events raising awareness and funds for research into Type 1 diabetes in children at Sheffield Children's Hospital.

Thanks to all 8 half marathon runners and the 37 children and parents that enjoyed the fun run.

A huge thank you to everyone who have sponsored us.

Rosey, an amazing lady.

Hi ToD supporters

Thanks so much to all of you who have already signed up to joining Team ToD at the Sheffield Half Marathon and family fun run. One of our amazing half marathon runners is Rosey Alexander. Rosey was diagnosed with Type 1 twenty years ago and this year we are privileged to have her join our team.

This is her story...

"I got diagnosed with Type 1 when I came to Sheffield Uni in 1994, at the age of 18. A husband, 3 gorgeous kids and a successful architecture practice later I'm still healthy and active. You can't ever forget that you're diabetic, but being Type 1 has never stopped me doing things, including running half marathons. This year I'm hoping to run my first full marathon too.
I can understand how limiting it can be for kids with Type 1. Managing the condition is easier if you lead a sedentary, predictable existence. And what kid wants to do that? With support, research and improved technology, kids with Type 1 can get out there and run races, run rings around their parents, run their own lives." Rosey.

Last nights ToD ball was an amazing success.

What a fantastic evening..... With the help and support of the guests at last nights Inaugural ToD ball we managed to raise over £3,000.
The hall looked amazing with the pumpkin table decorations (made and carved by children and supporters of ToD on Friday) and the evening kicked off with a speech by Dr Neil Wright giving an explanation of how life for children with ToD is affected. He also shared with us how the funds raised would be supporting valuable research at Sheffield Children's Hospital, looking at the most appropriate and effective education tools teaching children and their families/carers how to manage the disease whilst reclaiming some of the independence they lose as a result of it and hopefully preventing longterm health issues.
Then we sat down to a delicious meal expertly cooked by the chefs from kudos catering based at the hall while being entertained by the mesmerizing, slight of hand of magician Mark Maycock.
After dinner the amazingly powerful voice of jazz singer John Colgrave took us into a game of 'heads & tails' won by Andrew Rodgers.
The evening was successfully managed by the immensely skilled toastmaster and auctioneer Robert Leeming who was instrumental in raising a staggering £1, 930.
Due to the generous raffle donations and a very guick tally we are aware that a further £1,000 was raised from raffle sales. The final amount will be communicated tomorrow once we have counted and collected all the donations.
All in all there was lots of laughter and fun and a great time was had by all.

The support received was overwhelming and we thank each and every one of you for helping make a difference to the lives of kids with type 1 diabetes in Sheffield.

Ball Auction lots finalised ..... SEE BELOW

Welcome to the 2013 Inaugural ToD  Halloween Ball

Inside are the details of the auction Lots.

Foreword

We are delighted to formally welcome you to the Inaugural ToD charity ball.

We are here tonight to help children who have contracted an incurable, life changing, life affecting illness, Type 1 Diabetes.

No one knows what causes Type 1 Diabetes, it is believed to be caused by a virus, but no one has as yet been able to halt its devastating effects on our children.

Tonight we are raising funds for research at Sheffield Childrens Hospital into identifying better ways of managing the disease for these children and their families.

Tonight we welcome Dr Neil Wright, Consultant Paediatrician at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital who will talk about the valuable diabetes research he and his colleagues are performing and how this research will improve the quality of life of those affected.

With Gratitude

We have many people to thank for helping to make the Inaugural ToD Ball a success.

So many have given generous donations gifts and prizes. But those (especially the Crosspool  Mums )who have donated the most precious thing of all, their time we thank you most sincerely, without you we wouldn’t be here.

Donations of time include all of the people who helped us prepare the decorations for the Hadfield hall, especially the children; James, Grace, Finn, Ellie, George, Sofia, Albert, Paddy, Letti, Lena, Sarah, Sam, Jack, Linus, Dominic, Daniel, Laura & Rebecca for their individual pumpkin table decorations.

Robert Leeming our superb Toast Master & Auctioneer, Jon Colgrave for his silky jazz voice and one of Sheffield’s top magicians Mark Maycock.

Each gift in the auction and raffle has been donated with no strings or cost. It has been most humbling for us to experience how people are prepared to be so generous; in some cases with treasured possessions they spent years obtaining themselves, as well as those companies who were willing to help us.

Our thanks and gratitude goes to them all and of course to all of you for attending and supporting this event.

We hope you all have a wonderful evening and thank you for your support.
